The Basics
Although you cannot “lose” Medicare or Medi-Cal because of work, it is one of the biggest fears among those who get disability benefits. It is also believed that if you do go to work and have to stop because of illness, you’ll have to reapply for the benefit all over again. Both of these beliefs — or myths — are false. They are NOT true.
The possibility of employment for people with disabilities is now more of a reality than ever before. In fact, many people with disabilities are successfully working at meaningful jobs that are enjoyable and productive. Persons with disabilities who work have more money — and they are more independent than ever.
The rest of this article will provide you the information you need to be assured that you can work and keep your health care coverage. Here are some truths about employment while receiving disability benefits in California:
- If you are on Medicare and Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), your Medicare will last for more than 8 years after you start working.
- If you are on SSI (SSI) and go to work you can earn up to $36,423 a year and still keep No Share of Cost Medi-Cal.
- If you’re on SSDI — even if you’re on Medicare — and become employed you can enroll in the Medi-Cal Working Disabled Program.
- If your new job offers employer-sponsored group coverage, you may keep your public (Medicare and Medi-Cal) coverage and use private health coverage too.
- It is possible to have Medi-Cal, Medicare, and employer-sponsored group coverage all at the same time.
