The Department of Defense Increases Hiring of People with Disabilities

The United States government’s Office of Personnel Management recently announced that 14% of the Department of Defense’s civilian employees have disabilities. According to the Department of Defense (DOD), there has been an emphasis over the last few years to hire people with disabilities and wounded warriors (military veterans who have disabilities).

There are several strategies that DOD and other federal agencies are using to find employees with disabilities, including:

• Schedule A hiring
• Job fairs for veterans
• The Veterans Hiring Initiative
• The Workforce Recruitment Program

Like many employers, the Department of Defense has found that employees with disabilities bring diverse knowledge, problem-solving abilities, and skills to the workplace.
